Hey everybody, very exciting news today here on UDOO’s blog. Hold on tight because if you are a computer vision developer and you’re looking for the perfect Mini PC to mess around, we got you covered: here comes UDOO VISION AI KIT.

What’s UDOO VISION AI KIT?

UDOO VISION AI KIT will be presented at the Embedded World 2020, at Nuremberg Exhibition Centre, Germany, from February 25 to 27. The UDOO VISION AI KIT is based on UDOO VISION and the Intel® Distribution of OpenVINO™ toolkit for computer vision experts and newcomers alike. It is, hands down, the be-all and end-all Mini PC solution for computer vision nerds. The kit includes: the upcoming UDOO VISION, i.e. UDOO’s new computer vision-oriented SBC, a USB Full HD camera, and a power supply. The whole architecture is compatible with Intel® Movidius™ Myriad™ X VPU, the widely popular low-processor manycore FPGA unit for computer vision, designed for power-constrained devices.

The icing on top, though, are the resources for the Intel® Distribution of OpenVINO™ toolkit, one of the most popular frameworks for optimizing computer vision algorithms powered by deep learning. It comes pre-installed with UDOO VISION. UDOO, i.e., the lab behind UDOO VISION, aims at making this board the ideal platform for computer vision, and they’ve committed to this objective with a multitude of educational and software tools.

Also, a ton of invaluable resources, that is:

  • many many educational videos on how to take the most out of the kit
  • a get-started guide;
  • an all-round Technical Documentation;
  • a bootable Ubuntu-based image with Intel® Distribution of OpenVINO™ toolkit pre-installed;
  • UDOO Cloud, i.e., UDOO’s cloud platform for embedded projects, with support for one-click deploy of complex embedded applications and value-added services such as a Device Manager and a Docker-ready framework.

But what is exactly UDOO VISION?

UDOO VISION is a super UDOO X86 built upon a Pico-ITX pocket-size form factor, it comes in two versions. First, a premium version mounting an Intel® Atom® x7-E3950 Quad-Core. Secondly, a basic version, mounting an Intel® Atom® X5-E3940 Quad Core. Power-wise, the board shows an impressive energy-efficiency (12W TDP for the premium model, 9W TDP for the basic one). Memory-wise, it features a 32-bit Quad-Channel LPDDR4 soldered on-board, and can manage up to 8GB of memory.

There are many storage options, from eMMC to SATA, the M.2 SSD slot with support for SATA SSD modules. Not only that but also 2G/3G/4G/5G modems. Plus, a microSD card slot, available in combo with a miniSIM slot. In terms of video outputs? UDOO VISION offers a 1x multimode DP interface on a single miniDP connector and an eDP connector. The board can run 4K 60fps videos.

As far as connectivity is concerned, UDOO VISION features 3x Gb Ethernet LAN ports, an M.2 WWAN slot. But that’s not it! Finally, an M.2 slot for Wi-Fi ad BT modules. Also, several I/Os, USB 3.0 ports, PCI-e root ports, and serial ports. And if you’re into tinkering, the board also mounts an ATMEL ATmega32u4 microcontroller, reproducing a subset of Arduino Leonardo’s pinout.

During the EW2020, we will publish articles Demos featuring the UDOO VISION AI KIT.
